The murderous fisherman with a hook is back to once again stalk the two surviving teens, Julie and Ray, who had left him for dead, as well as cause even more murder and mayhem, this time at a posh island resort. Two years after the first series of murders, as Sydney acclimates to college life, someone donning the Ghostface costume begins a new string of killings.
The film centers on four young friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they killed a man. The film also draws inspiration from the urban legend known as the Hook , and the s slasher films Prom Night , and The House on Sorority Row After having written Scream released the year prior , Williamson was approached to adapt Duncan's source novel by producer Erik Feig. Where Williamson's screenplay for Scream contained prominent elements of satire and self-referentiality, his adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer reworked the novel's central plot to resemble a straightforward s-era slasher film. It was also nominated for and won multiple awards. I Know What You Did Last Summer has also been parodied and referenced in popular culture, [7] and credited alongside Scream with revitalizing the slasher genre in the s. While driving along a coastal byway, they accidentally hit a pedestrian. Julie's friend Max passes by them on the road. Julie reassures Max that everything is all right, and he leaves.
The screenplay was written by Kevin Williamson , writer of Scream, and very loosely based on a popular novel of the same title by Lois Duncan. The latter film did not star any of the cast from the previous two. The film received mixed reviews from critics. Julie tells him everything is fine so he leaves. They dump the corpse in the ocean and agree to never discuss again what had happened.
